Cleveland Golf Show Wrap Up

February 24, 2009

Monday, February 23rd…2009

Thanks to all of you who were able to stop by our display and green at the X I Center in Cleveland this weekend.  We saw some old friends and met some new ones, too.  We are pleased to be able to attend shows like these to meet people who share our passion for golf.  I never tire of watching the reactions of people who haven’t before seen a Southwest Green.  As a former PGA TOUR professional caddie and mini tour player, I know exactly how they feel when they hit that first chip and it checks like the real thing…

Every so often during my visits to potential clients, I hear feedback that companies trying to compete with Southwest Greens of Ohio like to slam our green surfaces for requiring maintenance.

That’s like telling someone not to buy a Cadillac because you will have to change your oil every so often!

The truth is any residential green will require some attention to keep it performing at the highest levels.  At Southwest Greens of Ohio, we believe our maintenance program is integral to keeping our clients satisfied and happy with the investment they have made in their backyards.  We also feel that having our clients know we are invested in the long term, not just the installation phase, confirms our commitment to them and the products we employ.

We know you love your golf!  We do, too!  Isn’t it nice to know someone like that has “got your back?

“No Maintenance” Nylon Green

This green, unfortunately, has to be replaced due to lack of care…

Nicklaus Design

December 11, 2008

We are pleased to announce that Southwest Greens and Nicklaus Design have signed a deal to remain Corporate Partners through 2011.

Although we have our own in-house design team, choosing Nicklaus Design to design your synthetic green has been a great option for years while working with Southwest Greens.  Please keep this in mind when it is time to build your green.

The Beginning

December 2, 2008

If you are a client of Southwest Greens of Ohio, we have most likely met.  For those who are just looking for a good golf story, read on…

Before I was hired by Southwest Greens of Ohio as the Lead Design Consultant, I spent 15 years plying my trade as a professional caddie on the PGA TOUR.  The first ten years, I worked for a player named Chris Perry.  He excelled at Ohio State University, winning 14 collegiate tournaments (tying Nicklaus’ all time record) and was named a 3-time All-American.  His success initially on the PGA TOUR was lukewarm and eventually he lost his exempt status which sent him to the Nike Tour in 1993.

I met Chris in late 1993.  At the time, I had qualified for and competed in the 1992 US Amateur at Muirfield Village GC in Dublin, OH and was looking to turn pro myself.  I was selling high end Japanese cars at a dealership in Dublin when he walked in looking for a car for his wife.  I knew instantly who he was having grown up in the suburbs of Columbus and having followed the careers of former Buckeye players.

“Hey Chris Perry!  How are you?!”  I bellowed.

I extended my hand to a somewhat surprised fellow at being recognized so easily.  We chatted about cars and golf and eventually I let him take one home for his wife to drive overnight.

I didn’t get the sale.  He ended up buying her a Chysler, but I felt I had made a friend in the process.  So, the following spring, at the urging of my father, I called him up on a Saturday night.  My intent was to caddy for him for three or four weeks so I could see the level of play and practice habits of some of the best professionals and whether or not I felt my game could stack up to them.  The conversation lasted about a half an hour and ended like this…

CP: “You have a car?”

Me: “Yep.”

CP: “Can you be in Layfayette, Louisiana by Monday night?”

Me: “Yep.”  (I have a real gift for the gab…)

CP: “Okay.  See you then.”

Thus began a career path that would take me across the country and eventually the world simply to carry a golf bag…

When I meet with clients to talk about designing and installing their own Southwest Green, I find a lot of confusion about what they expect from the green surface and its capabilities.  A lot of people picture the carpet turf of a putt putt course or the athletic turf of a football or soccer field.  Nothing could be further from the truth!

Today’s synthetic turfs are not your father’s synthetic turf…

The on-going R&D of today’s turf manufacturers has produced materials so lifelike and durable, many times you literally need to touch the turf to find out it is synthetic.  These qualities combined with our unique and exacting installation process are yielding greens that play and look like the real thing with very minimal maintenance.

Our clients are always astounded to learn we can shape these man-made materials into raised tiers, grass bunkers, sand bunkers, humps and bumps, tee boxes, chipping and pitching areas, and really, just about anything you can find on a traditional golf course.  And the best part is our surfaces will react just like a real green from any distance, whether it is 150 yards away or from that 30 foot flop shot your need to work on.

From the PGA TOUR to the beginner, we have a Southwest Green to help you get better or just to pass some fun time with the family in your own backyard!
